Hi Elaine, the best time to spray hornets is at night when they're at their most quiet. Get a can of that stuff that sprays 20 feet and you shouldn't have any problems. Be careful though and listen for them just in case a few come your way!

  • Yes!! My husband sprays them and then after a few days he knocks off the nests. Just be careful you have an exit route planned! Lol! He has sprayed it early in the morning, but I am not sure what time is best.

Some wasps/hornets overwinter in the holes. Is it in the ground?, in wood ? do you know what you are actually dealing with? Bumble bees in the ground?, yellowjackets in the ground or did they bore into wood? You have to get the queen or the colony will just carry on. You have to get whatever poison you use into the queen that is why most exterminators use powder and a bellows. The worker bees carry it in to the queen. You can spray but since we don't know what you have and where it is hard to tell. Yellowjackets can be killed with buckets of boiling water. You do that at night with 2-3 bucket of boiling water poured into the hole in the ground.

If they are boring into the wood it is likely to be the fat black and yellow bumblebees. They bore a hole and lay an egg in it. Spray the hole and plug it with wood putty. I hate destroying bees that help pollinate, but whey they interfere with your home, you need to do something. We did our old porch with a bamboo stick and rag tied to it with a tiny bit of gasoline on it. Hold it up to the hole and let the flames and smoke enter, but not long enough for the wood to be damaged. By morning we found dead ones on the ground. It isn't a whole colony usually just one female laying egg(s).

Spray the nest at night with an aerosol insecticide labeled for wasps and hornets. Be sure to wear thick protective clothing when you approach the nest, and avoid getting too close to it.

  • The queens are waking up and flying around so it's a good time to put up some traps to get the queen.

Since they are boring into the wood, you can spray into the holes with WD40, it coats their wings and they cannot fly off after that treatment. Then plug the holes.

I was wondering what you are referring to as the "holes". I've only seen them nest. However I have seen holes bored into wood caused by carpenter bees. Is this what you are referring to? If so, you can spray your wood with termite spray to keep them from boring holes into it.
