If you plan to paint the fire box, then you need heat resistant paint. Clean it well with TSP before painting.

A primer would be a good start. Brick is very porous and will soak up a lot o paint in the nooks and crannies. Then paint with the color of your choice. I'd suggest a satin finish rather than flat paint.

If not in the firebox, I would caution you to not only clean the area between the firebox and mantle,
but it also consider a smoke-friendly color,
as that area usually has smoke residue, no matter when you last had the chimney swept by a pro.

My cousin did a whitewash of her fireplace with thinned latex paint. As long as you are only doing the surface, you should be fine.
