Outdoor cushions

I was looking in my shed & opened the storage chest where I keep my chair cushions. They are very dirty looking. Anyone have any ideas of what I could spray on them to brighten them back up? Not that I'm rushing the summer or anything, LOL. TYA

I've always used the highest pressure on my house and dish soap. Also, good old fashioned elbow grease :)

You could mix white vinegar and blue dawn 50/50, spray then hit with a high power hose.

You could try Awesome from the Dollar store, I've had good luck with that on this type of cleaning, have fun this summer.

Hi! If the covers are removable, I would soak them in the tub overnight with Oxiclean. If not removable, pick up some sponges, a bucket and a scrub brush at the dollar store. On a sunny day, scrub them with Dawn dish detergent and your sponges and scrub brush. These can remove most grime. Rinse and dry in the sun. This works well and you can rinse them with a hose or a bucket of clean water. Good luck!

I’ve seen people have great success washing them with a pressure washer. If you need an upholstery cleaner I can’t say enough good things about Folex.

Hello. I have found washing them in Oxi clean solution sometimes can be helpful. Sometimes if they are full of mold and mildew they are a little too far gone. Alternatively Rustoleum does make a fabric spray paint and the user reviews were not that favorable for the cost of the product.

Instead of running out and buying some try the homemade recipe for oxy clean first to see if it works for you.

You can wash the cushions with Tide that should get the dirt off. When dry spray with Camp dry to repel dirt outside.

I would wait for a nice warm day, bring them outside, get a bucket of warm water and some upholstery cleaner and a brush. Give them a good scrub, rinse with garden hose and let dry in the sun..

Are they removable? If so, you could always throw them in the wash. If they aren't removable, it might not be a bad idea to cut one side and sew in a zipper so the can be removed each winter and be stored inside and you could easily wash them. You could scotch guard them as well to repel water.

If there is any mildew or mould that has permeated the outside covering on the cushions and gone down into the foam, then it will be very difficult to wash the cushions clean again. It would be adviseable to replace both the outer covering and the inside foam.

Using a seam ripper, carefully slit open enough of the closing seam stitches for you to see the underside of the outer fabric and the inside foam. If you see any black dots, this indicates that mould is already growing inside the cushion.

If the underside and the foam look clean, then follow suggestions from other Hometalkers, above, as to how to clean the outside.
