Try clearance areas of furniture stores, also Facebook Market place. is a great place to look, if you feel you cannot make your own.
You could skip making a headboard and decorate the wall space above instead. I found a beautiful scrolled metal heart and Hobby Lobby for under $5 that I used in my girls' bedroom. Much prettier, easier, and cheaper than a headboard. Bonus is I don't have to worry about them bumping the headboard on the wall when they flop down on the bed.

This will take some wood working tools and skills and for the price of lumber these days may not be that cheap. Using 2x2's as the frame and ranch board plywood will make a nice basic headboard...
