This kind of project is easy to make and will be an impressive addition to your home. I live in a beach community and make/sell these for beach towels left and right. But you can make something like this for your guest bathroom or use it as a coat rack in any room. Wood, hooks and a little imagination is all it takes.

Wood

I used a cabinet door that I picked up. But you can use any piece of wood.

Painters tape

First I painted the front and back white. I placed painters tape to cover the outline area and then placed more where I wanted stripes. Be sure to start in the middle. I used an extra piece of painters tape to measure the space in between. If it doesn’t measure out perfectly by the time you get to the end on both sides it won’t matter. The two ends might be slightly narrower but it will be the same on both ends

Prep before paint

I used a tennis ball to smoosh down the tape nice and tight. Then I put a coat of Mod podge on and made sure that the brush went up against each of the painter tape edges. Once it’s dried this will almost completely stop the paint from seeping underneath the tape.

Add color

I’m painting it a light greenish color that is very very beachy. (If you’re doing this for your bathroom you can choose colors that match or you can stain the wood.) I’m using a stencil blotter sponge and decided not to go with full coverage. That means you’re going to see some of the white poke through. You can remove the painters tape when it’s still wet. Just be very careful.

Adding more color

I love love love to add a bit of additional color with a dry brush technique. You get a chip brush and put a little bit of the paint on it. Then offload the paint onto a paper towel. When there’s just very little left on the brush you then drag the brush lightly over your project. I went from left to right in a very straight line over both the white and the green.

Finish

I use Minwax clear flat polycrylic as my finish. I’m going to add another piece of wood for the “beach towels” sign after the finish dries.

The sign

I painted the extra piece of wood the same color with full coverage this time. I used my Silhouette computer software program to make my stencil that says beach towels. Then I cut it out on my Silhouette cutting machine. I use cheap shelf liner as my stencil material.

Prep again

Just like before I used my tennis ball to smash down the stencil nice and tight and then went over it with Mod podge. When it was dry I used white paint to stencil the letters. Then I used liquid nails to glue it on centering it.

Hooks and hanger hardware

I did add two coats of the polycrylic on top of the beach towels sign. When everything was dry I added the hooks on the front and the hanger hardware to the back side.

Check it out.

Hopefully with me holding it up you can tell the size and have a better look at it. But you can make it any size you want. I think it looked really nice keeping the stripes on the inside of the cabinet door. If you have any questions just let me know!
