I recently purchased a chandelier for our bedroom ceiling. This has some antique gold detail on it and I decided I wanted our bedside lamps to match this. So I decided to try out Rub ‘n Buff on the brushed chrome lamp stands to give them a little transformation!

Best spray paint!

Here is a before photo. We’ve had these lamps for about 10 years but I don’t feel the brushed chrome matches the rest of the room anymore, so it was definitely time for a project!

I taped the top of the lamp and the base of the cable with masking tape. I also tied bags around the plugs and the top to protect the electrical parts.

I then sprayed a coat of primer first.

Followed by a coat of Matt black spray paint. Since this didn’t need to be perfect and was just to create a base layer underneath I only did one coat as this gave enough coverage.

I allowed the paint to dry for 24 hours and then used Rub ‘n Buff to create the antique gold effect.

I actually used the shade European gold as I thought this would be the best colour match for the look I wanted.

I took a dry, stuff paintbrush and applied the Rub ‘n Buff in mostly circular movements.

I added a little bit at a time to a bottle cap and gently dabbed the brush in it and removed any excess. The Rub ‘n Buff dries instantly and you cannot wipe it off so it is best to apply cautiously and add more as needed rather than applying too heavily.

This was after one coat. I wanted a heavier and more blended coverage than this so I applied a second coat.

I used the same technique of swirling motions using the top of the brush to apply the second coat. Again, using only a little.

Here is the result of the second coat. A lot more blended but still with the black showing through in places to create that antique look. I especially love the darker details around the ridges.

I left to dry for over 24 hours and then buffed with a lint free cloth.

Here is the finished result! I love how easy it was to achieve this look. Since I already had the materials I just had to purchase the Rub ‘n Buff so this project was very affordable. I have seen people using this product in projects and I’m so glad I’ve finally been able to try it for myself. It definitely creates a different look to gold paint and I would really recommend it for ease of use.

I love how these lamps just look more expensive somehow and they definitely blend in with the ceiling light that we picked out.

I also love how they tie in so well with the matt black hardware (see previous post for details on this simple transformation). The room feels so much more complete and the lights really do add the finishing touch. I will post another picture of the whole space once the ceiling light is installed.

I hope that this post inspires you to have a go at updating some metal finishes in your home!
