Change a floor lamp to a torchiere
i have a floor lamp that I would like to change to a uplight torchiere, but I'm not sure how to do this.
Hi Kathy, perhaps setting it into something like a heavy pot (a pretty flower pot comes to mind) or a crate would help?
Floor lamps have a round disc weight on the bottom held in place by a large nut. Sometimes the nut gets loose and needs tightening. Home Depot, Menards do sell replacement disc weights. Measure the inside of the lamp base so you get the right size.
It may need tightening if the pole is loose.
If the issue is the base, then you might need to add some type of shim. Consider felt pads to even it up.
Hi Kathy,
Three legs are better than Four for stability. If you have a lamp with a flat bottom, try using 3 spaced out ball feet. Otherwise wedges might help.

Some floor lamps are tippy due to the shade being too large or to heavy for the strength of the centre pole and/or the width of the base of the lamp. The heavier and larger the diameter of the centre pole, the more stable the lamp usually is.
Also, unfortunately, some very low priced lamps no longer contain an adequate sized disc weight in the base, which can make them very unstable.
Please post a picture of your lamp so that we can see what you have to work with.
Your floor lamp could be top heavy and have a tendency to tip when bumped. You could add weight to the base to off set this, there are disc weights at diy stores you can buy to help compensate. Another thought is where you have it located, the floor maybe uneven, adding to the imbalance. If you have it partially on a rug and bare floor, that could contribute to the tippiness, be sure it is on a flat smooth surface.
Hi! Is it heavy enough at the base? Is it sitting on a level surface? If it isn't on a level surface or it's top heavy, it won't be stable. A picture would help!🤔
Kathy: I have used weight (superglued on bottom) to steady objects. Here's an example from Amazon: Yes4All Standard 1-inch Cast Iron Weight Plates 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25 lbs (Single & Pair)
Hi Kathy, I have a wobbly lamp in my loving room, due to the cushy carpet, my solution to this was to pick up a plastic flower pot saucer that is a few inches larger than the base of the lamp and put it under the base, it allows the lamp to balance better on the cushy carpet, and you can buy these in solid plastic or clear disposable plastic, if you go with the clear, double or triple the saucers for sturdiness. See in the picture how it sturdied the plant pot?
