I agree, if you can get them out and paint them, that would be the easiest way. If not, then tape off the area you do not want to paint with painter's tape .

Dip a small brush in stain, paint the dowel with the stain and immediately wipe the dowel off with a dry cloth. For painted dowels, wet a brush with paint and paint the dowel. If you have a bunch of single dowels to stain or paint, place them in a shallow box. Use a spray gun to shoot them with stain or paint.

Mask off each end of the dowel near thefirst areayou paint, let dry well, add another coat if needed, let dry well. Then mask off the area so you can paint the dowels. I'd use a small sponge, plastic gloves and simply wipe the paint on each dowell insuring there are no drips or runs, let dry, and paint another coat the same wa (with small sponge soaked in paint). Let dry well and remove the masking tae. I've painted many dowells and metal decorative fences with a sponge and you can control the finsih extremely well because the paint is right in your hand.

  • Likely you'll need to give them a light sanding then put some primer on them. After that, you can paint them.

Spray painting would be the easiest way to paint them. If you can suspend them, that would make it easier to paint all the way around.

Hi Donna, I am assuming you cannot remove them? You may want to paint the first color, then mask off your fresh paint (once it has dried well) them brush on the next color.

Take a sponge paint brush, cut a half moon slot in it to fit the dowels. Then paint. You can also use a utility cloth work glove and dip the fingers in paint.

After you have painted the frame and let the paint harden, you can use a little bit of painters tape to tape off the frame where it touches the dowels and paint the dowels with a small brush.

Agree with the above posters the smallest brush that have a good quality is an excellent suggestion. They do make a paid pad on a stick but that might be too large or cumbersome for your project. Try to mask off any areas so that paint does not drip or splatter. Take your time put on some music on and enjoy the process.
