We are gradually updating our 1970s house, and one of the jobs that needed to be done was replacing the crawl space door. Not only was it an eyesore, but it was also falling off the hinges and not very secure.

Here is how I built and installed the new door, and I'm also including the video if you'd rather watch that.

Step 1:

Here I am measuring the door frame

These are the wood boards that I'll be using. The 1" x 6" boards on the left will be for the actual door, and the 1" x 4" boards on the right will be for the strapping.

This is how the 1" x 6" boards looked when I laid them down:

Step 2

Now I'm cutting the 1" x 4" boards that will be used for strapping.

Here is a shot of the door lying on the ground just to show you how it will look when the straps are attached:

Step 3:

Next, I am cutting down the 1" x 6" boards so that they are the proper height.

Step 4:

Next, I'm attaching the straps to the 1" x 6" boards.

Step 5:

Reinforcing each strap by screwing in deck screws from the back.

Step 6:

To complete the look of the door, we'll add styles. So, here I am cutting out 4 vertical pieces to add to the door. When I was done cutting them, I attached them the same way as I did the straps.

Step 7:

Next, I screwed the hinges onto the door.

Step 8:

Lastly I stood the door up in the door frame and attached the door to the frame by screwing in the hinges. Then, I attached the door latch.

Step 9:

Enjoy the new door! Hope you enjoyed watching.
