Hello have you considered chalk paint? It is a fabulous option for wooden items.
Clean with tsp or scuff with fine steel wool then clean with alcohol. Prime and then paint. I prefer brush paint but you can also use spray paint. Main thing is donโt sand, just disturb the finish so new paint will adhere
Sand it down smooth. Seal it with a Lacquer coating, then use a paint sprayer to paint the item.
I would use chalk paint
