Hello. It might be best to call your paint manufacturer for proper instructions. Usually the 1-800 customer service numbers are very helpful when I have use them. Primer is always a nice undercoat providing for smooth base coat. Whether necessary may depend on the purpose of your metal item handling and exposure that it will receive.

  • I would look on the bottle of paint. It will tell you which surfaces you can use it on. The primer will help cover the color of the metal, but is usually white... so, if you're using glass paint over that it may not be as saturated of a color you are looking for. I would maybe try out a tiny spot and see how it looks first.

  • Oil-based paint is best for metal. Glass paint may not be the best choice.

Wipe the metal down with rubbing alcohol. Let it dry. Scuff the surface with fine sandpaper, foam sanding pad, or a green kitchen scrubby. Wipe any dust off. Apply a thin coat of paint and let it dry. Then apply a second coat of paint.

  • They sell paint for metal in spray cans. I would use that plus primer for metal as well.

Why would you want to use glass paint for metal? There are different formulations of paint for each type of material.

If you can't get paint rated for metal for some reason, I would for sure prime it first. If it is possible, I'd still try and find the right paint for the project though.

I would definitely prime but I think investing in a paint formulated for metal is worth the investment. RustOleum is my go to for metal.

Rustoleum makes a spray paint formula called 2x that is Paint and Primer in one for metal.

Rustoleum has a paint made for metal

  • I would use paint for metal only. If you want to use detail paint you could use Testors paints. They are enamel and made for models and are very strong. You don't need a primer, just a clean dry surface.

Hi Janice, just make sure the metal is clean and dry and you should not need primer
