April Showers Bring DIY May Flowers

You could buy your unfinished wood flowers already cut out on etsy, Amazon, or this website I found called 24 Hour Crafts. But I'm one of those lucky ones whose husband likes tinkering in the garage with tools and so all I needed was some wood and a stencil to get going.

The pine wood in the 6 ft length will get me 6 of these flowers at the cost of $1.73 for each unfinished flower measuring about 11".

The stencil is one I found online and printed, traced onto the wood, then he used his bandsaw to cut out the shape and gave it a once over with a sander.

Once the unfinished wood flower is in hand give it a wipe with a dry cloth and pick your colors. This is my favorite part and I have tons of colors to choose from. Anything bright and cheery will do!

I like to apply the paint with a cosmetic sponge because it only needs one coat and looks good. I did need to use a skinny paintbrush to get it down between the petals.

Paint the center of the flower in a contrasting color either freehand or make a stencil like I did.

After the paint is dry you'll want something to seal the paint and wood if yours is going outside. It's May and we're still getting lots of rain so I sealed mine with some leftover polyurethane I had.

Brooms from the Dollar Tree make great stems when you use the ones that have hollow metal handles! Just unscrew the broom head (save it for future sweeping!) and slide the handle off.

Using brackets and wood screws attach a broom handle to the back of the flower with the open end on the bottom.

To display outdoors hammer a 3 ft length of rebar into the ground then slide the open end of the broom handle onto the rebar.

I put my flowers in groups of 3 and love the color it adds to our fun little space here!

I did consider spray painting the flower "stems" green but haven't yet. Do you think it would add to the look or not?

My granddaughter is one of my best helpers!
