Rusty Can Door Hanger
I wanted an inexpensive door wreath that could be used for more than one holiday or season and that would be shallow enough to fit in between our seasonal door and front door. I prefer floral wreaths, but finding one that fits is always a challenge. I decided a door vase would be a perfect solution. Using a rusty can and mostly Dollar Store supplies I had on hand, I made a hanging door vase that will hold inexpensive seasonal floral bouquets.
I didn’t want to spend money for this project so I looked through my craft stash to see if I had everything I needed. Fortunately, I had plenty of leftovers from past projects. I would of preferred a spring forsythia floral arrangement, but I decided to just use the flowers I had on hand.
For my vase, I used a flattened rusty can.
I decorated my can with Dollar Store transfers that I had leftover from a chair project I did last year. Using craft paint would of been my second choice if I didn’t already have a transfer.
I intended to use this fabric ribbon to hang my vase, but decided to use it for trim instead.
I used Modge Podge to adhere my trim.
I also blended a bit of the can rust to age my ribbon.
For the vase hanger, I fed craft wire through two small holes I drilled in the top back.
I twisted the wire to secure my hanger. (I realized my hanger wasn’t long enough so I ended up using coat hanger wire.)
I chose to seal coat my can vase since I had a few different sealers on hand.
I decided to use the ArtMinds Varnish to seal my can.
I arranged my $12 bouquet and wrapped the stems.
I knew my stems were too long so I inserted them into the vase so I could mark them before cutting.
Once I had the stems marked, I asked my husband to trim them with his heavy duty cutters.
Water proofing wasn’t necessary, but I chose to spray my flowers so I they can be rinsed before storing them.
Once my flowers were dry enough to handle, I put them in my can vase and pressed the can down enough to secure the bouquet inside
I added an old rusty frog plant pic and hung my can vase on our front door. Now I have a door decoration that I can use for any holiday or season just by switching out the flowers. I’ll probably leave these flowers up until 4th of July. I plan on making a patriotic themed bouquet using dollar store flowers and ribbon.
This Door decoration was cheap and easy to make. I had everything I needed so it cost me nothing. Had I gone out to buy new flowers, ribbon and a transfer, my cost would of been $15.

Just be careful working with a rusty can or other rusty object, to avoid a tetanus infection...I know, I don't worry about that stuff either, but we should!
