Last summer I was gifted a parsley plant. Since I didn't plant a veggie garden, I planted it in a front yard flower bed... and left it all winter long.

Call it lazy or curious... but what transpired this year I did not expect!

Not only do I have a full-grown parsley plant before our gardens have even been started, (who knew?!) I decided to ramp things up a notch...

Grabbing some cheap 1.5" cedar strips from the local hardware store, these charming little helpers positively steal the show... sorry parsley, but thanks for the nudge!

Here's what I made:

Preparing the cedar strips

My local hardware store had these 1.5" cedar strips bundled up for cheap. Each one was cut straight on one end and 'picket style' on the other. Easy!

You can also land ready-made garden stakes in many place that would also work.

Painting label backgrounds

I decided to add a little more interest by first painting some label backgrounds. I masked off the areas to create borders, and coated them in various tones of Fusion Mineral Paint.

About the stencils

Next up was adding plant names!

Grabbing Garden Labels - Herbs, this would be an easy step!

Garden Labels from Funky Junk's Old Sign Stencils come as herbs or vegetables (each sold separately) with the most popular plant names.

Included are decorative borders and leaves so you can further customize your plant labels!

The stencils are loaded with plenty of peek holes so you can easily align the words against narrow stakes.

So let's pretty up those garden labels even more!

Stenciling the herb names

Using the peek holes, each herb name was aligned to the cedar strip, then stenciled in contrasting colours to the tones used underneath.

Those stencil peek holes are the bomb! This made alignment perfect and so easy!

Adding details

Various borders and leaves were then stenciled to the labels to pretty them up even more!

The added details turned these garden labels into mini works of art, like making mini garden signs!

Aren't they the cutest?

The finished garden labels!

And here they are working hard making my garden look even more beautiful!

Check out that parsley plant to the left though, huh? Who knew a lazy gardener could turn out to be such a green thumb?
