Upcycled Nightstands

When Goggins Creations reached out asking if my artist sister in law and I would like to try their Fusion Mineral paint, the answer was a RESOUNDING YES! The masterminds behind Goggins Creations are a husband and wife team who strive to help make your house a home with custom created signs and Fusion Mineral Paint.

Neither of us had ever tried this type of paint before so it was such a fun experiment. Danielle Goggins describes it as most similar to chalk paint but it is actually a mineral paint, Meaning- it is 100% acrylic resin.

Here are a few things we found interesting about this paint:

1. Built-in topcoat- what??? This is amazing news because it takes out an entire step which makes our process so much quicker.

2. Minimal prep needed- helloooo, does anyone else dread the tedious prep work?

3. Non-toxic, zero VOCs, and virtually odorless- super good news with kids and pets around. this also means you can paint inside, which in the Georgia heat is amazing.

4. High coverage- yes please.

5. Waterproof- also yes please (see above note about kids and pets.) You can also use this for outdoor projects.

We chose Renfrew Blue and fell in love with this beachy bright color.

We found these two nightstands at a local thrift store and set to work.

Step one: Prep

We removed the doors and hardware and gave the night stands a good scrub with Fusion Mineral Paint TSP alternative.

This is so important to do before scuffing, because the cleaner removes dust, grease, fingerprints etc and if this step is skipped, you are just pushing the debris into the surface.

After a quick clean, we filled in any damaged spots with wood filler and then sanded lightly and gave the pieces another good scrub with the TSP alternative.

Step two: Alter doors

We knew we wanted to incorporate cane webbing into these nightstands so we removed the middle of each door with a jigsaw. I used a spade bit to drill into each corner to allow my jigsaw blade to fit easily. We then sanded these edges and cleaned again.

Step three: Paint

We gave our container a good shake and went to it. The paint consistency was a lot looser than we were used to so it was a bit of a learning curve. The first coat went on quickly and we allowed it to dry for about an hour. Fusion Mineral Paint dries matte and to the touch within 30 minutes and allows a second coat in 1-2 hours. The second coat gave us an incredible amount of coverage and the color really started to pop. We did three coats total just to get the maximum amount of coverage. This small container allowed three coats on two different pieces which I felt was really good, especially since we do not have the added expense of a primer or topcoat.

Step four: Attach your cane webbing.

I used a staple gun for the cane webbing and then brad nails for the spline.

Step five: Paint hardware

We decided to keep the original hardware to save money so we just spray painted them black. You can definitely add new pulls for a different look. Do this while your coats of paint are drying to save time.

Step six: Apply wallpaper

We chose this wallpaper for the inside of the nightstands for a fun pop. It is peel and stick so application is so easy.

Step six: Reattach doors and hardware

Once your paint has fully cured (we waited overnight to be safe) you can put the hardware and doors back on.

We absolutely love how these turned out They make such a statement with this vibrant color and the Fusion Mineral Paint was a huge hit with us. We will for sure be using it again. Check out my Instagram for the videos and more thoughts.
