How to Make a Sign Into a Useful Storage Cabinet... for Free!
I make lots of DIY signs for my home. But when you are squeezed for wall space, it's really nice if those signs can actually DO something other than just look pretty, am I right?
In some cases, I'll create signs on top of bulletin boards because that's useful! Or add hooks to hang things.
But this round, I wanted to create a way to hide some woodworking tools in the kitchen behind some art...
Here's the pretty fix, that's MUCH more productive!
First up was creating kitchen-themed art! Which was done using a bulletin board so it could be extra helpful!
- Attach 4 boards together to create a frame. (I used a Kreg Jig)
- Trace and cut a bulletin board behind it to fit.
- Stencil a cheap sandbag to create coffee art.
- Sandwich together the frame, bag and bulletin board.
Grain Sack Stripes G3L (find stencil HERE) was stenciled first in Fusion Mineral Paint's Bayberry for an authentic coffee bean sack touch on top of a cheap sandbag!
Organic Coffee (find stencil HERE) was then stenciled on top of the grain sack stripes in Fusion Mineral Paint's Coal Black.
How to stencil:
- load stencil brush with paint
- off-load paint onto a rag until brush feels dry
- tap paint through stencil for desired effect
- Lay door or door frame down.
- Cut 4 pieces of reclaimed wood to create a box that fits perfectly on top of the sign frame.
- Attach the cabinet frame together with screws.
Add some additional boards inside the cabinet for extra support, shelving and so there is a way to attach the cabinet to the wall.
Attach the sign to the cabinet base with hinges from the side.
Then add a big 'ol cool door pull and you have yourself...
One super cool storage cabinet that will hide anything desired!
And in my case, just enough woodworking tools to fit inside, perfect for my kitchen!
I mean, who would ever know what's behind that chic coffee sack sign? My kinda pretty storage...
