DIY Tea Cozy
An unfortunate downside to preparing tea in a teapot is that it will cool down if you don’t drink it somewhat fast. But drinking tea and fast shouldn’t be in the same sentence at all, so what can you do?
You can use a tea cozy!
If you’re love tea but haven’t heard about a tea cozy yet, you’re going to love it. It’s as the name says, a cozy in which a teapot is placed and then your tea stays warm for longer.
You can make a teapot easy and fast, here’s how.
You'll need:
- 2 coordinating pieces of cotton fabric
- batting
- matching thread
- tea cozy pattern (free PDF file)
- measuring tape
- standard sewing notions
Take measurements
Use a measuring tape to measure the width of your teapot at its widest point. Then measure out its height, going from base to base over the top.
Divide both measurements in two and then add two inches to each number. These will be your fabric width and length.
Cut the fabric
Before you can cut the fabric, you will need to make a pattern first.
Mark the length and half of the width on a folded piece of paper. Make sure that the length marking is on the fold
Starting at the top length marking, draw a curved rectangle or a quarter-ellipse going to the width marking. Cut out that shape and unfold the paper.
Use the pattern as a cutting guide and cut out two pieces from each type of fabric, including the batting.
Cut out a small strap of fabric for the loop as well.
Make the loop
Fold the strap in half lengthwise, wrong sides in. Open it up and fold each side to the crease. Fold back up in half lengthwise. Fold once again in half so that the short edges align. Pin to keep in place.
Stack the fabrics
Place the outer fabric over the batting with its right side facing up and align the edges. Quilt straight lines through them. Do the same with the second outer fabric and batting piece.
Set the lining over the outer fabric with their right sides facing inward and align the edges. Sew the long straight edge. Repeat with the remaining fabric pieces.

Sew the tea cozy
Place the loop between the two layers on the center of the edge opposite the seam. Align the short raw edge of the loop with the outer fabric edge and pin together.
Open up both fabric pieces and stack them on each other, lining on the lining and outer fabric on the outer fabric. Keep the right sides facing inward and align the edges.
Sew all around, leaving a small gap unstitched at the lining for turning.
Finish the cozy
Trim the batting as much as possible. Then turn the cozy right sides out.
Fold the edges on the opening in and sew it shut.
Push the lining into the cozy and press everything. Topstitch around the opening with a quarter-inch seam allowance.
That’s it for this project, we hope you liked it!

The teapot that is showing in your project, is called a 'Tea for One.' I think they are really cute and I have a small collection of them. They can be found at thrift stores from $2-$5. Some are even theme pots, such as 'Red Hat Society' or even Disney.
