Scandinavian Inspired Candleholder With Moss – Cozy Living

My Word for 2021

Before I get into the DIY for this Scandinavian Inspired Candleholder, I want to talk to you about my word for 2021. I don’t usually pick a word for the year… the word normally picks me! I know it’s corny, but it’s true. After the “knot in my stomach” kind of year we’ve just had it just hit me one day that I need to gravitate towards calm. I need to focus on the simple things that calm me (like beautiful candles). I need to focus on myself when that knot is there. The things that usually calm me are very simple and doable things like, candles, walking in nature, photography, organizing, laughter and creating. I’m happy to be starting 2021 with a calm project, one that soothes me to just look at, I hope you’ll like it too.

DIY Candleholder with moss

This is a very simple DIY – I used the things I had in my house, I also went outside and picked some fresh moss from the rocks that surround our home. These are the things I gathered for this project.

Large wooden dough bowl – or any bowl you love!

Large plate – with a flat center portion – you can also use thick cardboard if you’d rather, this is just for gluing the candles to – tip: any hot glue will scrape off of the plate once you are done with your candle bowl

Spent candles – I gathered all different sizes (all of my tapered candles are from Ikea)

Spanish moss ( from Michael’s)

Fresh green moss – when harvesting moss after a couple of freezes (in my case) it is not necessary to rinse your moss – in the summer months you should always rinse your freshly harvested moss to eliminate any critters that may be making a cozy home in there

Hot glue gun – with glue sticks

Rubberized shelf liner – to stop any sliding of plates

A platform – something to raise your plate up – this saves on the amount of moss you will need, it’s a nice little cheat

Plastic shopping bags – for stuffing

step 1 : place your raised platform in the bottom of your bowl, use the rubberized liner to stop any movement of your platform or your plate.

step 2: place your plate on top of your platform, then stuff any gaps with the plastic shopping bags… these bags will stop the spanish moss from falling down into the bowl – you don’t have to do this step, it just saves on the amount you use.

step 3 : decide on the candles you want to use, I arranged them from tall to short on the plate

step 4: start gluing your candle sticks down onto the plate, just a little dab will do. Start with the tallest in the middle and work to the shorter ones on the outside

tip: keep turning the bowl to glue the candles down in the empty spaces that look good to your eye

This is what it looks like once all of the candles are glued on. The glue scrapes right off of the plate once you are done with burning of the candles – no worried, no plates were harmed in the making of this candle holder.

step 5: Stuff the spanish moss all around the candles, just enough to cover the plate and the bags, this is just the base layer and doesn’t need to be uber thick. You don’t want the spanish moss up too close to your candles.

*** when using candles and moss ensure you do not leave any burning candles unattended***

step 6: harvest fresh green moss – This is the actual spot I collected the fresh moss from, it’s rather easy to harvest, just get your fingers under a staring point and peel up, it peels off of the rocks very easily.

step 7: lay your moss out to ensure you have enough for the space you want to cover, if you look closely you can see some snow remains on the moss, that’s okay, by the time I laid it on top of the spanish moss it was absorbed in.

step 8: start laying your green moss on top of your spanish moss

It should look something like this… I don’t fill the green moss to the edges, I really love the way the spanish moss has “frazzled hair” and sticks out. 😉

Adding Calm with a Scandinavian Inspired Candleholder

For me this project exudes calm… it’s so peaceful with the gorgeous green moss and white candles. I’ve seen similar bowls like this one on some Scandinavian sites I follow… this is my own twist to the ones I have seen. I hope you’ll be inspired to add some of this calm to your home this year too after all, home is where the calm is.

I love lighting one or two of the candles, I mean it’s so pretty you don’t have to light them all…

or light any of them, to me this is calmly beautiful as is…
