That depends on what material the lampshade is made out of, and what furniture or decor style you want the lamp to match with.
Please post a picture so that we can see what you are starting with.
I've seen them covered with fabric, lace doilies, and decoupaged.
Hi Wanda, there's oh so many ways to decorate lampshades. Here's a link that will provide basic instructions but you can do so many different looks, depending upon what you want. If the shade is light, you can even print out a word or two and tape the page to the inside of the lamp and the print will show through when the lamp is turned on. I did a series of "Z's" for my two bedside lamps, just for fun!

You can paint, but use spray paint so not to show brush marks when you turn the light on. You can glue appliques, or fabric on top of the old lamp shade.

You can paint it, cover with contact paper, or add a design with Washi tape.
I have stenciled them and also added fabric.
You can decoupage it with chinoiserie papers, that would be so cool
It all depends on what you're looking to do. You can paint, add things, ribbons, tassles, the list is really endless. Try using the search bar at the top left and you'll get lots of great ideas.
You can decoupage it.
Here's a link to a video with some great ideas. I've also simply covered a shade with the body of a sweater and once a part of a crinkle style skirt with a great pattern on it.
