DIY Shelf Covers

...okay remember my post on my linen closet organization? Well I promised a post on how I made my shelf covers and here it is.

We only have one linen closet in my small house and it was CRAMMED. Not at all functional.

So I got to work organizing it- for a reminder you can see that post here. And also as a reminder- here is the before of my terrible linen closet.

I decided to make some wood covers to hide those ugly wire shelves.

I started by measuring the wire shelves. These covers needed to be 22” long and 12” deep and the faces for the front would be 3” wide and 22” long.

So I went to my scrap wood pile and found everything I needed left over from previous projects.

If you are starting from scratch- here’s your list:

•1/2” plywood

•1x3x8 for the facing. (one would cover 4 shelves, I have 5 shelves so I would have bought 2 of these)

•nails

Tools:

jigsaw

nail gun

sander

clamps

These need to fit over the wire shelves so I needed to make a cut out for the brackets. I used a piece of paper to trace around them so I’d have a template.

Then transfer this template onto your plywood.

The I cut everything out with my jigsaw. You could also use a table saw for the longer cuts.

After I got them all cut, I had to make some adjustments bc my closet walls are not straight.

Once I got them to fit, (a little kicking was needed) I placed all the plywood shelves into the wire shelves and used my nail gun to attach the 1x3 for the front.

I spent $0 on this project because it was all left over wood from other projects so I call this an absolute win.

Looks nice. I kept my wire shelves but I finally organized my extra toiletries like toothpaste and toothbrushes in plastic shoe boxes and labeled the outside of them. We had so many light bulbs that I put one of those plastic drawer units at the bottom of the closet and put light bulbs in it. Easy to access.

Funny you mentioned light bulbs. Spent king’s ransom on lightbulbs that pkg said lasted years. Far more than I needed but somehow I justified purchase. Went thru all of them in less than six months!
