Birds nests?

How do I keep birds from making nests in my handmade wreaths and ruining them. The secondd nest was made of mud and caused a big mess.

  • Sounds frustrating. Where are the wreaths in relation to the birds? I'd suggest either making wreaths that don't give a handy way to nest in or maybe move their locations so birds aren't interested.

The wreath is on my front door and I change it with the seasons. I don’t know where else I could put it except inside the house which defeats the purpose totally!

Put something shiny in the wreaths. Birds do not like silvery things. I used some very small silver christmas balls on an outside wreath and that solved the problem.

Hi Rosalie, here's some info that may help. I;ve not tried them out, but if you experiment and find a solution, I hope you will share it on Hometalk.

In my experience of keeping birds away, shiny objects (CD's, ornaments, Mardi Gras necklaces) do not scare the birds away. They just get used to them, and quickly.

You might try a weave of mono-filament fishing line to deter them. You would have to weave it from the outside, covering the area where they are nesting. Best to you, Sorry they ruined your wreathes.

Another thought is to check your wreathes frequently to see if there is any start of a nest and quickly remove it (the nest, not the wreath).

This last suggestion seems to be the only fool proof method that will give the wanted result 100% of the time. I removed one nest then put the wreath back on the door and within less than an hour another nest was almost completed although it was made mostly of leaves and mud. I removed the nest and replaced the wreath with a smaller and cheaper one and apparently it was too small because the birds did not even try again. They did go elsewhere but I have some repair work to do on my handmade wreath. I do have a bird feeder in the backyard where there are plenty of places they could nest but my wreaths in front have been their go-to spot for 3 years running. It was a novelty at first and I did not mind, but this last time they damaged my beautiful wreath and really dirtied up the glass door not to mention all the dried twigs on the porch. It’s just not funny or cute anymore. LOL Thank you for your responses, everyone.

I wouldn't do this (I am terrified of snakes) but at least one realtor suggests buying fake plastic snakes and putting them in the wreath. The idea is that birds are afraid of snakes but this isn't a long term solution since this only works for a short time until the birds get used to the fake snake.

I tried using big pin wheels to keep the birds off our fence and it worked for less then a week.

Good news is this should only be a problem during the spring and late summer.

If you don't mind how it makes the wreath look why not some old panty hose? That would keep the birds and flying insects away and still allow air thru and you to be able to see the wreath as well.

  • For the past few years I've had robins trying to make a nest in the corner of my porch. As soon as I see them start, I remove the twigs, leaves etc. It takes a few days, but they eventually give up. This year, they didn't even try.

  • You ca look fo aluminum products available at your home, then hang them up near your wreath. It is because birds do not like shiny objects, which will from coming anywhere near your wreath. Hope this helps!

Hello. I would try bird deterrent spikes if it were my situation. I had a problem at my mailbox post it was-a toilet and this sorta deterrent was made with hand fashion wire worked. The only clean mailbox on the street.

    Hello Rosalie,

Cover them with wire netting! You obviously make a realistic and comfortable venue, so maybe add a few thing to put the birds off. Maybe ornamental birds?

Can you add some items that are shiny to the wreath or nearby? That is a good deterrent. Also, adding a fake hawk or owl nearby usually will scare them away.
