How would I create a brown to black ombre on wooden furniture?
Hello! I have two nice pieces I am working on and was inspired by some other pieces I saw that had a brown to black ombre. I was wondering if there was an effective way to create this look. So far, I'm thinking brown gel stain under black chalk paint distressed to show the brown in an "ombre" like way. OR Painting the piece in black and going in with brown paint and blending them together. I am super unsure and would love some guidance in a method to achieve that look.
Thank you!

Hi Kate,
What material is presently on the surface of your furniture? Different surfaces will respond differently to the same gels and paints. Posting a picture of you pieces would enable us to see what you are starting with.
Do you have some pictures saved of the effect that you would like your pieces to look like?

It might partly depend on the current status of the piece but you could use brown and black stains or paint. If you wanted to do stain and paint together, do a test piece first, see if it works. Make sure you’re using either all water based or oil based, not a mix of types.

Folks,
Please scroll back up and take a look at the two pictures Kate has now posted ,before commenting. The first picture shows the piece she has to work with. The second shows another piece that she would like to have the first one look like.
Hi,
Start with Brown then add a little black then a little more black until finally it is all black.
I agree with John, I would do the brown gel stain first, then do the black..... you might even paint some wax on the bleeding edge to act as a resist. Then you can remove the wax with steel wool or heat it with a blow dryer and blot with cotton rag. Then 1/2 mix of white vinegar and water will remove any excess wax.
