Hanging Plant Ladder
You know those inspiration pictures you see and you just have to have it or build it? That was to is project for me. I’m a plant lover and I had the perfect window for several plants but no room to have them. A plant ladder to hang plants off of was the perfect solution. This inspiration picture is everything, especially the dogs!
I started with an existing ladder we had. I took it apart because I only wanted to use the side rails (see parts of a ladder in picture below). If you don’t have an old ladder, two pieces of wood about 4-6’ long and 3-4” wide will work.
For the “steps” or rungs of the ladder I used 1” square wooden dowel. I had an old round dowel from a chair that I used for two rungs and bought a new square dowel and stained it to match for the other two rungs.
After the stain was dry I clear coated them with a clear paste finishing wax. I use this product on a lot of my projects because it has a quick dry time, it doesn’t change the color of the wood and it has a matte finish.
Once the wax was dry, about 15 minutes, it was time to construct the ladder. I began by pre-drilling holes in the ends of each ladder rung.
Then measure and layout where you want each rung to be attached. Mine had to be at specific intervals due to the pendant light that hangs above the bathtub. Once you have your layout, pre-drill the side rails. Then you will attach the rungs to the rails with 2” wood screws.
The plant hangers I ordered came with hooks. However, I wanted my hooks to be white so I went ahead and sprayed them black. Once dry, it was time to decide where I wanted the hooks installed. I laid them out equally down each side of the ladder so that the weight of the plants would have equal distribution.

Best way to paint hardware is to stick it in a cardboard box so you can paint all sides at one time.
Next step is mounting hardware and chain to hang it from the ceiling. We installed two hooks in the studs of the ceiling. Then eyes on each end of the ladder rails. We used the carabiners to easily adjust the chain that hangs from the hooks in the ceiling.
Adjust the chain so that your ladder is at the height you want. Keep in mind your plants will be hanging and you don’t want them too low that you will hit your head (I know from experience 😂).
Now you’re ready to start planting and hanging.
Our window is a South facing window, gets all day light and can get pretty hot in the Summer time. Most of the vining plants I have, do well here as long as I remember to water them regularly. Occasionally I have had to switch which ones are closest to the window.
