People OVER USE fabric softener. I never use it and never have issues with towels fluffiness or softness.

If you have been using fabric softener on your towels, you can remove the build-up in a few simple steps. Go through your linen closet and pull out all of your towels. If there are any old towels you want to donate, separate those so you can concentrate on the towels you’re keeping. Set your washing machine to a hot wash cycle and add the amount of detergent as directed by the brand you use. Add the towels to the washing machine and close the door. Pour about a half cup of white vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser. Make sure you have cleaned out any softener residue before you do this. You can also wait until the rinse cycle starts and add the vinegar directly to the rinse cycle. Dry the towels once the wash cycle is complete. If the towels are more absorbent the next time you use them, continue adding vinegar to your rinse.

There are several ways to soften towels naturally, but the easiest way is by using a combination of baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar work great to fluff up worn out towels.

Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the wash. You can just pour it in after the washing machine fills up with water.

When your washing machine is going through the rinse cycle, add 1/2 cup baking soda to the wash.

Vinegar is a great natural way to remove any buildup residue and/or odor from your bath towels that may have led to them losing some of their softness. The baking soda is a great natural fabric softener and also helps to remove buildup.

I always use fabric softener even though people say don’t. I buy high quality towels and they stay fluffy, soft, and absorbent. I have only bought towels every 15 years once they begin to ravel.

  • Run them in a load with vinegar as the detergent and skip the fabric softener as it builds up. Don’t strip any laundry as it’s damaging; it doesn’t do anything except remove dyes and weaken fabrics.

  • Start by washing your towels with hot/warm water together with one cup of white distilled vinegar. After such, run a second time with only a half-cup of baking soda.
