I put mine into clear Poly bags with label on quantity and Ply. You could also put in Poly storage boxes. I put colours together, eg: Reds, greens, yellows etc.
I did my friends massive supply of yarn by getting a bunch of plastic crates and milk crates from a friend's store..... then I coordinated them by color in the crates, and some specialty types in their own crates. I zip tied them into towers, and then zip tied the towers together to make wall to wall crate storage. Just clip off the zip wings stick out.

I suggest you to use wire baskets to keep the yarn together and organized. They are better because you can see through them on all sides.
