I’ve heard a bar of Irish spring soap in quarters around the property. They don’t like the smell

Where do you have your squirrel problem? Are they in your home?

Eliminate the reason they're being a nuisance. Bird feeders etc. will bring in squirrels by the droves. There are lots of ways to squirrel proof bird feeders too, good luck!

you can trap them (the wildlife dept may loan you traps) and take them out of the area but you can never truly get rid of squirrels just be sure you don't have food (for pets, etc) or anything for them to eat and they will move on

Hi Marleen, here's a link to several ideas that may be of help. The main thing is to do as many of the suggestions as possible to discourage them so they go elsewhere.

Hope this provides you some inspiration!

Some good suggestions from fellow Hometalkers, all your effort to get rid to them maybe in vain, you may have neighbors that think they are cute & totally adorable and they feed them.

    An exterminator

  • You can try to put some red pepper flakes in your planters and that may discourage them from digging in them. It's difficult to get rid of them altogether though. We did notice an increase of them in our yard after our cats had passed. The cats did keep them at bay.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife explains that the best way to keep squirrels out of your yard is to maintain your property. Make sure your shed, greenhouse, water house, or other outdoor buildings are in good repair.

Patch any holes on the exterior of the building, and replace broken windows to limit their access. Cut back vines and vegetation from your home to eliminate their hiding places and the ability to climb.

If you have bird feeders in your yard, make sure to place the feeders on an 8- to 10-foot metal-wrapped pole and put it far from anything the squirrels can use to climb. You can also buy squirrel-proof birdfeeders to keep squirrels at bay.

Squirrel-proof your outdoor garbage cans by making sure they have tight-fitting lids and don’t let the garbage pile up. Not only will this keep squirrels out of your yard, but it will help to eliminate other pests like chipmunks and raccoons from taking up residence.

You also want to make sure you rake up and remove any berries or nuts that have fallen from your trees to keep squirrels from being lured into your yard by the scent or sight of the food.

Hi! Not to argue, but, trust me you do not want anything dying in or around your house. Are they in the house? A few years ago, we had some galloping across the attic. We eliminated their entry points (they can fit through tiny spaces) with metal mesh and covering the openings. But, first we chased them out with containers of mothballs. Keep track of where you put the mothballs, because, trust me, you want it out of your attic because it reeks. Once things were tightened up, they quit visiting us. In a yard, you can try motion activated sprinklers and electronic devices intended for chasing them away. Good luck!
