Easy, Unique Lighting - Without Electrical Wires!
I’m excited to share a project with you today that has been two years in the making… but only took about ½ an hour to complete, LOL!! Has that ever happened to you?
A few years ago, I started thinking about how we could creatively add some decorative lighting to our covered porch, without (1) paying for an electrician to come in and do some wiring and (2) running I unsightly extension cords. I love unusual lighting that is made with vintage pieces, so I got the idea to use the tops of vintage chicken waterers, and add remote-control puck lights to them.
I ordered these lights off Amazon. I love them because they come with a remote control and offer various lighting options, including a timer setting.
The lights came with 3M stickies, but I found that they did not hold well to the galvanized metal. So I turned to my trusty DIY friend, Sugru, to help me out! ( I have a few more posts that use Sugru, check them out!)
I used one package of Sugru for every light that I attached. For some of them, I added one light. For the larger pieces, I added 2-3 lights. I set the Sugru onto the back of the light, and then pushed it firmly onto the metal. It takes 24 hours for the Sugru to dry. Once dry, you will still be able to twist the front off of the light and change the batteries whenever needed.
Here’s what I ended up with. I attached them to some old pulleys I had on hand already (I collect junk!), and hung them up.
They light up the porch really nicely, and I love that I can choose a warm or cool light tone! No wiring needed, and so easy to turn off and on with the remote. Did I already mention that I love the timer option?
By the way, I recently re-did this section of the porch. The indoor-outdoor rug is from Well Woven Rugs, and the furniture is from RST Brands. We love them - we use the porch so much more now!
What do you think? Would you do this project? What would you use for the light fixture (other ideas besides chicken waterer tops)?
Thanks for reading through my post. Please remember to give me a follow on Instagram and Facebook @jagcagdesign, where I share lots of photos of home DIY projects!
Happy DIYing!

This is good for a rustic look. Go coastal and use woven waste baskets instead of chicken waterers with a loop of raffia/twine/hemp through the bottom to hang them.

I’ve bought so many puck lights from Amazon and the batteries just don’t last long enough. I finally just bought a string of lights and threaded them through a window. My husband put a heavy duty toggle switch on them and we can turn them on and off easily. Our deck is not finished but we enjoy sitting outside in the evenings and the string lights add a nice ambiance.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I had no idea that puck lights were that strong. Do they come in different brightness.
I was thinking of trying it but as with another person on here I have had NO luck with puck lights- if you found good ones you should direct us to those exact ones on amazon- maybe the brand is listed?
Hi Jagcag, VERY nice thank you for sharing. MY question is about the remote controls for the lights. do you have to use all three or will one turn all the lights on all at once.
