To get rid of flies, clean up any animal waste as well as decaying matter.

Mosquitos, you can make sure there is no standing water in your yard, this includes gutters, they need water to breed. Even something as small as a bottle cap will do. Keep your yard in good shape with trimmed bushes and a well kept lawn.

Plants that repel mosquitos work but not as much as many hope.

Generally a fan near your door blowing them away from your entrance will do wonders, they are weak fliers.

For other bugs, you'd have to identify them. If they are Japanese beetles, you can get Japanese Beetle traps, they work by having a pheromone on top of a bag, They are drawn to the scent and go into the bag, never to come out again. Hang this bag as far away from your plants, trees, etc as you can.

For us #1 is keeping the grass mowed and any tall grass kept down to a bare minimum not just in our yard but also in our large dog kennel. It makes a BIG difference. After that removing attractants is very important. If the bugs get real bad on our deck I spray the entire space with the mouth wash mix recipe. It does seem to help. Here's the recipe. https://insectcop.net/make-homemade-mosquito-spray/

Mosquito yard spray: 1 big bottle of cheap blue mouthwash - 3 cups epsom salt - 3 12oz bottles of cheap stale beer. Mix until salt is dissolved. Put in spray bottle and spray everything. Won't harm plants or flowers.

There are organic yard sprays like Greenerways or Wondercide.

You can also make one of the fan mosquito traps... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvI2aWZXPCE put an open bottle of club soda in front of the fan and the CO2 will attract them faster.

You can also make some of the recycled litre soda bottle fly traps, good also for wasps and yellow jackets.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMcae4QACy4 you can use cat food, small salad shrimp, dog food for the attractant

Clumps of basil will keep flies away. Lemon grass and lemon verbena, lemon thyme and scented geraniums will all repel mosquitoes. Pennyroyal will repel fleas. French marigolds, basils, rosemary, thyme, oregano, mint will repel deer, and cats. Rue is highly effective at keeping cats and dogs out of flower beds. Spurge will repel deer, groundhogs, cats, dogs, but do not handle it unless wearing long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection.

Hi! After removing anything that attracts flies and mosquitoes, an inexpensive box fan blowing toward you will make a huge difference. I always keep a small section of the garden for butterflies and bees and I can sit and watch them for hours! The bees are too busy to bother us!
