Is the furniture press board on the underside?

You can scuff sand the headboard and prime with a good primer such as Kilz, then paint in a unique color to add some pizazz to your room.

It does not matter what they are made of, just clean well, prime with Kilz, and paint and then seal. You can use an acrylic based latex paint it you wish and then seal with several layers of polycrylic.

Maybe Contact Paper or Wallpaper if you don't want to paint. Lots designs and colours, or decoupage or Mod Podge on fabric could be a solution.

You can paint it. Just scuff up the surface with a Scotch Brite pad. Prime with a stain blocking prime then paint.

Hi It can be painted, but you need to make sure you use a good stain blocking gripping primer such as kiz. I would also spray paint it so that there are no brush marks. Rustoleum would be perfect for this project.

Cover with contact paper or removable wallpaper.

You could cover it will a pretty pattern or solid color of wallpaper or you could take the cabinet door off (if you dont want it) to open it up and give you more space

Sand it and paint it white.

If you are unsure about paint, use contact paper to brighten up the inside of the cubby areas. You can also use contact paper on the doors (wrap them like a gift) to add a little contrast to the darker frame. You can also use a peel and stick for the very top (which would make it easier to clean) and can even change it out either seasonally or to match the decor of the room.
