Since I’m a furniture painter I don’t typically buy pieces that are already painted.

Why?

Because they need a lot of work so I can get back to that blank canvas and that takes a long time.

While out thrifting I saw this black chest of drawers that was structurally sound so I did what I don’t typically do.

I bought it and the matching dresser that was also painted black as well! I’m wild like that.

I used my Wagner heat gun and a

scraper to remove the paint from the piece. This can take a while!

Once I removed most of the paint I went back with my orbital sander to smooth it out. Starting with 120 then 220 grit.

Now I like to be pretty creative at times. Sometimes it takes me forever to finally figure out an idea.

So after several hours of looking and pondering I decided I was going with a mountain design. I’ve never done one before.

I freehanded a design on paper to get an idea of what I wanted on the front of the dresser then I drew it out in pencil on the drawers.

For the sun I used a pencil tied to a string and taped it to where the center would be to make a circle.

Here I am doing my best to cut in around the circle.

Here is a very rough picture with the chalk paint colors I used for the scene. It looks bad before it looks good.

I had all these colors on hand already and they go together well.

After going back and touching up my “mountains” I painted the body a beautiful blue and kept the legs natural wood as I wanted a wood element.

This piece was so much work but now I can finally say it paid off and I’m glad I challenged myself.
