If you’re looking for a simple way to add something fun and interesting to your yard or garden, these stepping stones are a perfect project for you. I wanted to make my stepping stones fun and summery, so I painted them like fruit. But you can, of course, paint yours with any colors or designs you like. Are you ready to get started on this DIY stepping stone tutorial? Keep reading!

Tools and materials:

  • 2 buckets
  • Oil
  • Cement
  • Water
  • Exterior paints (multiple colors)
Make DIY stepping stones

Coat with oil

Before mixing and adding cement, I coated the bottom and sides of my bucket with oil, so the stone will be able to slip out easily once it’s dried.

How to make DIY stepping stones

Mix

In a separate bucket, I mixed my cement according to the instructions on the package.

Transfer

Then I transferred the cement to the oiled bucket.

Simple DIY stepping stones

Smooth out and let dry

To smooth out the cement, I tapped the bottom of the bucket on a flat surface, turning it and shaking it a bit, until the layer of cement inside was smooth and even. Once it was smooth, I let it dry for a full twenty-four hours.

Remove

After twenty-four hours, I was able to remove the stone quickly and easily from the oiled bucket.

Paint

Then I painted my stone with paint that is meant to be used outdoors. The paints I’m using here are color samples from Behr. As I mentioned previously, I’m painting my stepping stones to look like fruits. This one will be a watermelon.

Fill in the gaps

I went over the stone a few times to make sure all the crevices were filled in completely with paint, and no gray was showing through.

Decorate your garden

Once the paint dried, I put all my fruity stepping stones outside in my garden for my children to enjoy!

Aren’t these stepping stones adorable? Let me know what you think. If you use this tutorial to make DIY stepping stones of your own, I’d love to see them in use in your garden!

This could be a fun painting project for the little one in the pic and her siblings or friends, a nice way to create keepable, showable art. The fruits are super cute too, enjoy!
