Easiest Faux Brick Ever!
I’ve been working on a fireplace build and felt like it needed some extra character! Using my favorite faux brick method it came to life! There are many ways to achieve faux brick but I love how cheap and easy it is to get three-dimensional texture this way.
First, tape off your brick pattern using this thin tape. Regular painters tape is too wide for a realistic looking brick. I used a long level to mark my lines before taping. These are about 2 1/2 inches apart. I like to make mine a little bit imperfect to make them feel more organic.
Next. Slap on joint compound directly over your tape. I prefer to use my hands so that I have more control and the tape doesn’t come up. It washes off easily! The thicker you apply it, the more dimension your brick will have.

The best part is peeling off the tape! Do this while the joint compound is still wet so you don’t risk cracking.
This will reveal a beautiful Brick texture! It looks so real! It will take a few hours to dry and if you got it really thick it may need to dry overnight.
The last step is to paint your bricks to your preference. I like to use reds, browns, or grays to give my brick a realistic color before white washing. You don’t have to white wash but I like the soft, subtle look it gives. If you do want to white wash just use water down white paint! You can achieve so many different luxe with this. The whole thing can be white or you can leave more color poking through.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
would this be safe to use around a working gas fire place?
So what goes into the opening? Surely it's not left like this right?
How are you going to finish it? It looks like a brick box with a hole, and 2 outlets you covered.
