Upcycled Garden Orbs
After our home burned, we had several rings left in the ashes we sifted - from our former wine barrels. I save them all, knowing that someday I would make some of those really neat garden orbs (you may have seen these in shops or on the Internet). Here is how we decided to make ours. They took very little time and are SO neat in the garden!
We also tried to group rings together that were about the same size. Each wine barrel has 2-3 different size rings on it. It's best to make each orb with like-sized rings.
The first thing we did was mark the metal rings. Some of ours were pretty bent and misshapen from going through 1700+ degree wildfore heat, but we just did the best we could. I laid them on a straight line, eyeballed the "halfway mark" and used a sharpie to mark each side. This is where we would be drilling the holes.
Next, hubby rigged up a board so that he could hang them and easily drill a hole.
We used 3-4 rings for each orb. After we had all the holes drilled, we used a small 1.5" bolt to keep them all together.
We left the bolts loose until we had both sides done, arranged the rings how we wanted them, and then used a screwdriver and wrench to tighten them down. This took two of us.
That's it! All done!
Our boys are professional musicians, and shot a music video in our garden for their new band (album release this fall - The Gill Brothers Band!). We wrapped the orbs with lights and used them as part of the decor.
So fun, right? I love them!

I have rings from old whiskey barrels that fell apart. Hubby tried to throw the rings away but I assured him I would find something to do with them. Thanks for the idea. The wooden pieces have made a nice path through my perennial bed
