Change tone of cherry frame
I’m wondering if I can change the color/tone of a shiny brownish cherry frame to perhaps add highlights. I don’t want to paint as I just had an embroidery custom framed in it and am fearful of then ruining the embroidery.

Hi Bev,
You'll probably have to remove the embroidered piece from your frame to do anything to the frame.
To begin with you could clean the frame with TSP, that may be enough to dull it down and remove some of the shine.
If you'd like to proceed further, here is a link with multiple suggestions on different processes:

If you'd like to strip the frame a good non-toxic stripper is Citri Strip.
Thank you for you response. So kind!
You will run the risk of damaging the embroidery. You will need to remove it before doing anything to the frame.
you can remove the embroidery that is in the frame to paint the frame - anything you use on the frame with the embroidery inside it be subject to harming it. I would take out the embroidery and then paint the frame or antique or distress it and then let it dry and put the embroidery back in
You’ll need to remove the embroidery from the frame and then you can have at it. Without seeing the frame, it’s hard to say what can be done. You might be able to sand it or use gel stain. Or let the framer know you’ve changed your mind about the color.
You really need to take your embroidery out to do this. I had an old picture my grandparents had hanging in their home. The finish was so almost non existant that I just applied some stain to darken the frame. Took about 5 minutes and looks great. I let it dry about a day just to be on the safe side.
Hi Bev, hope this helps you out,
How about a few fine brush strokes of a lighter complimentary color., you could tape off the glass and actually paint it too
Take the embroidery out. It should be a simple task. If you can't figure it out place a piece of thick cardboard from a box the size of the inner frame and push against the embroidery. Then add highlights you want. Spray or brush on your highlights.
I like this idea- to add just enough color/ sparkle to light the look. TY!
You can use Rub and Buff and control the amounts with your fingertips
You could scuff with fine steel wool and add a glaze.
Do it your self with gold

TY!
Hello,
you could stencil on it, or use Sharpies (Freehand) or Silver or gold Pens, or add on stick on embellishments etc.
TY for your ideas!!!
I agree that you should remove the embroidery first. Then I would try using a chalk paint on the frame. I like Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint. It goes on smoothly, is easy to use and comes in a variety of colors, and a lot goes a long way.
