Here you go, be sure to read all the way through before doing this:

How to soak your smelly blanket

    1. Half-fill a pail or basin with water.
    2. Pour a cup of white or apple cider vinegar.
    3. Pour Ā¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide.
    4. Add Ā½ cup of baking soda.
    5. Add Ā½ cup of laundry detergent.
    6. Stir the water inside the pail or basin with your hands to mix the cleaning agents.
    7. Put the blanket inside the pail or basin.

Move the blanket as if you're rinsing it manually for around three to five minutes. Make sure that the blanket is fully submerged when you leave it for the night.

    1. Squeeze the blanket to drain the excess water and prepare to wash your blanket in the washing machine first thing in the morning.
    2. Proceed with cleaning your blanket in the washing machine.

Itā€™s still advisable to follow the same procedure mentioned in steps 2 to 5, but this time, youā€™re letting the washing machine do the all work for you.

I like the last step 2, less labor intensive to let the washing machine do the work with the same result. I soak things in it all the time.

Also I would suggest air drying outside, weather permitting.

it sounds as though the source of the odor is from the box. You can check with your paint supply store if they have a product to remove the smell. If not I would empty it and let it air out, I put fabric dryer sheets in my blanket bin or add some of your perfume to cotton balls and place in the bottom corners of the box before returning the washed blankets for storage,

Let it air out in the sun for a few days when rain is not expected. Put newspaper in the bottom and an open box of baking soda in it. Both absorb smell. It will fade in time.

I would also put it outside in the sun for a few days. It looks like it was stained and then probably sealed - both will have a strong smell until it fully cures. Outside for a few days in the sun should take care of it :)

I agree that the box needs to fully cure for the odor to go away. As for the blankets, wash them if possible and toss in the dryer with a hefty splash of white vinegar thrown on top of them. It will remove the odor completely. If they are not washable, put them in the dryer one at a time with a splash of white vinegar and turn the dryer on "fluff".

Yes wash them with one to two cups of vinegar and detergent. Dry as usual in the dryer with fabric sheet. Then hang them out in the sun for one day. I did this to two Chicago Bulls jackets I sold on Ebay.

For the box if you can't get the smell out you can seal it in with Bullseye Sealcoat.

How to Eliminate Odors in Wood

Your best hope for sealing in any odors is shellac. It makes an excellent barrier coat over all wood species, and it sticks to almost anything. Zinsser makes a great product for this purpose, called Bullseye SealCoat. Itā€™s a clear dewaxed shellac that you can apply to those drawer interiors easily with a brush. It dries quickly and should help to diminish mice, mildew, musty, smoke, urine smell. And since it doesnā€™t contain wax, you can apply other finishes like lacquer or varnish over it ā€” theyā€™ll stick just fine. SealCoat is also handy to have around the shop as a general purpose wood finish and sanding sealer. So, Iā€™m sure youā€™ll find other uses for whatā€™s left of the quart you buy.

Wash them and line dry them or throw into dryer with scent beads or scented dryer sheet. I have found that given time the paint smell subsides.

OdoBan is the best thing I've used to remove strong odors.

First thing I would try is to wash and hang outside to dry in the sun.

  • Give everything a good wash and maybe set the box outside for a few days to air out.

You could line the box with material or cardboard

I would remove the items from the box and launder using a couple of cups of vinegar in the rinse cycle, then dry in the sunshine outdoors if possible. Also, I'd move the container outside and spray a clear sealant on the inside and outside and let dry for a few days in the outside air. After bringing the container back into the home, I'd add one of those boxes of Arm&Hammer Baking Soda usually produced to be used in a refirgerator as a permanent object in the box.

Looks like you got a ton of help on this one! I also am a firm believer in letting it dry in the sun. :)
