James A on Jul 27, 2011Rust-Oleum received good reviews. Cons are that you can't clean with chemicals. Water or manufacturer's cleaners should be used. And, like other surfaces, you should not cut food on it. Rust-Ooleum contains HomeShield(TM) Antimicrobial Protection which will protect the painted surface by inhibiting the growth of mold and mildew and other odor or stain causing microbes. Can tint to one of 16 colors to coordinate with existing flooring, fixtures, etc. Washable, moisture and chemical resistant against common household items. No primer need for laminate surfaces Rust-Oleum 1460260 Countertop Transformations Large Kit 50 Sq. ft. $210 is online, http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=countertop+kit&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=13738011097203569050&sa=X&ei=0hgwTpmjDMa_tgezsuWkCQ&ved=0CDEQ8wIwAA.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jul 27, 2011For long term durability I would avoid a "paint" type product. Replacing the existing Formica with new Formica is pretty inexpensive. And would allow another 10-20 years of flawless service. A couple of years ago I worked with a client who had all of the counters refinished in a condo. Here a product was used that is normally used on bath tubs. sinks. etc. When those surfaces are used they offer a 10 year warranty, with the counter he was only offering 2. This indicates a potential durability issue in my book. Earlier this year I installed some granite tile over some existing laminate, ( with backer etc) This eliminates the demo and new ply expense. The granite tile will last years and years and for this kitchen was only about 600 in materials. Mid-sized sink base and counter run along with an equal sized island. Islands can be more per sq ft due the added expense of the add bull-nosed edges.Helpful Reply

Jackie T on Aug 14, 2011I'm with KMS ... we had someone to perform that techinique on the countertop at work .... Not good. We store our Industrial size coffee pot on the countertop. Lots of scratches and it looks cheap. Should have just purchased a formica type. a 10ft is only $105 at Lowes.Helpful Reply

Ruthann T on Sep 08, 2011My husband and I (mostly my husband) redid our formica countertops with the Rustoleum Countertop Restorations kit. It turned out beautiful and was less expensive than replacing all the countertops. We are very pleased!Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Sep 11, 2011Ruthann...your still in the Infant stage...The real test will be a year or two down the road. I have seen laminates that were 20 -30 years old and still holding together...dated looking but functionally still performing well...same thing with some tile.Helpful Reply
