Reclaimed Wood Pumpkins

Knowing we accept any and all types of reclaimed materials, some friends gave us old hardwood flooring they had removed from their home. We knew we could build something amazing out of it!
After seeing something similar built out of pallet wood, we knew we could easily substitute the hardwood flooring in its place.
There wasn't enough of the flooring to use it again as an actual floor, so we pulled the nails and cleaned up the useable pieces.
After drawing pumpkin shapes on particle board and cutting them out, we cut strips of flooring to cover the pumpkin templates. One inch brad nails were used to attach the flooring to the template.
Then we trimmed the excess flooring from the template with a jig saw.
When the pumpkins were cut out, they required a lot of sanding to round off the edges and remove the old finish from the flooring.
Each pumpkin was finished in a different color and then finished off with a coat of Van Dyke brown glaze.
A small leg at the back of the pumpkin keeps it from tipping over.
We gathered sticks from our yard, stripped off the bark and nailed them to the back of the pumpkin to create the stem. A coat of spar urethane will help protect them from moisture but should not be left exposed to the elements as particle board is very absorbent.
These "pumpkins" should last for years and are a refreshing addition to our fall decor. For more projects like this, follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kruses-Workshop/544083725671242
