The Best Time to Plant Roses

Depending on where you live and garden, your rose bushes will fare better if planted at the right time. This chart of planting times will guide you in planting your roses at right time.
A row of rose bushes
In my area (zone 5), I always find that planting in the very early spring is my best option for bare root roses, but sometimes I'll purchase a rose or two later in the season, usually through a mail order company (like Heirloom roses) during their end of season sale.

I make sure the rose still has time to produce lots of new roots. I keep it watered well, and after a hard frost, I'll cover it with a pile of leaves to help protect it.

Come spring, I uncover it, and begin fertilizing it at the right time. I haven't lost one yet!

Warmer climates have a different planting time frame.

Sunsprite
This rose (Sunsprite) is a hardy Floribunda rose that got planted late in the season. It loves to produce sunny yellow flowers!
