I'm fortunate to be getting two wing chairs for free! I was wondering if anyone has done a DIY version of chalk paint on upholstery. Would like to try a DIY version instead of Annie Sloan.
Not yet, but after seeing, what they did with Annie Sloan, I'm going to try it with my own mixture of chalk paint, I will be using Sherwin Williams satin and Calcium Carbonate. 4 tablespoon CC 4tablespoon water. Mix the CC wit the water, WELL, to one quart of SW.
I have made my own chalk paint with plaster of Paris very easy and inexpensive :1 1/2 cups of paint 1/2 cup of hot water and mix 1/2 cup of Plaster of Paris dissolve well then add to paint best kept in a glass jar ... I did my 3 kitchen stools by diluting the chalk paint with water and spraying the fabric with water it took 2 coats with 24 hours drying in between coats and sanding then I sealed it with clear seal or you can wax it but the fabric ends up feeling leathery just keep that in mind it won't feel like soft fabric anymore.
hi there..yes you can chalk paint furniture. It doesn't change the pattern, just the color. Fabric will absorb the paint more. You will use more paint covering fabric that will absorb and suck up the paint, compared to painting a wood dresser. You will most likely need to apply 2 full coats perhaps a third in specific areas pending on the color you chose.
Just finished my occasional chair today. Went from medium brownish to creamish white. Used Calcium carbonate, plaster of paris and water...all 2 Tbsp. to 2 cups of paint. Used eggshell. Did not need to spray, or add water.. did 3 coats on the upholstery...turned out beautiful. Had about 8 oz. of paint left. As stated in previous info, the chair becomes leathery in feel...but I have a friend who did a chair a few years back,,,and it still looks great..like leather.
I buy Waverly brand at Walmart in the craft department for about $6 a bottle. You have to use lots of water when doing fabric, so two bottles would do these chairs. I spray the entire fabric down with water first from a spray bottle, then paint a thin coat of paint 1/2 paint and 1/2 water. Let dry overnight, do the same with the next coat 1/2 paint and 1/2 water, let dry overnight and one more coat should do it. Then brush wax on - I like the Waverly brand because you brush it on from a bottle not a paste. Here is the before and after of a chair that I recently did...

So it feels like leather after the chalk paint?
