I found an old (1960's?) sewing bench at the flea market and knowing that my husband really needed a footstool since he can't tolerate his recliner anymore; I decided to rebuild the bench into a footstool with storage for his blanket, pillow and heating pad.

This item might be older than you think. I'm thinking 40's or 50's. You've made a good item by repurposing it.

My mom had a stool like this at her machine. My sister has it now so I sent her this article. I can appreciate the storage for fabric and threads.
