Thoughts on re-doing this chair?

I have this one old chair that looks like it was shellacked some time ago but I want to paint it but not sure what to do about the seat - paint or leave as is. Chair is in great shape. Thanks,

I love the natural look, but depending on the color you painted the chair, a darker stain color might also look pretty. Or, if you'd rather the seat take the spotlight, you could try one of the colored stains on the seat and keep the chair a neutral color. Lol. I'm not sure I helped you narrow things down. :-/

@Sharon, I have four stools just like this. I've painted them twice. The last time I decided to use a gel stain on the rush seats. Not a good idea. Though they held up for some time, anytime a bit of the rush wears off you can see the natural color underneath. If you don't mind touch ups, it takes awhile to dry as it was oil based, it does look great.

  @Z Love your 4 colors what kind of paint did you use on the chairs themselves...I think I'm going to copy you! Love your kitchen. What would you recommend on the seat if not gel stain?

  @Thank you Sharon. I used just latex paint and a good brush with the colors and spray painted when I did them back to black. They were black and when I bought them. And I just remembered I used a spray stain/poly on the rush seats, not gel stain. Here's a couple better pictures of what our kitchen looks like now. The little unfinished shelf on the yellow wall on the left of the first photo is one I redid by adding wood trim and painted black not long after these photos were taken. Oh and the ceiling in the sunroom has been finished since these photos were taken too. I need to take new photos again.

  @Z Beautiful Becky you did a great job, wish you were handier, haha. Haven't made my trip to HD yet so will change that to spray stain (never heard of this) for the seat. Thanks!

  @Thank you Sharon,there's still so much to do to finish the kitchen, and our whole home for that matter, but for the most part the kitchen is finished. The spray stain I used for the seats is made by Minwax. It's not easy to find. Lo's carried it at one time, but I can't remember if I've seen it at HoDe. They do carry Minwax products though so there's a chance they either have it or can order it. You could check your their website with your zip for availability. I've seen it at hardware stores too.
