Purchasing A Metal Roof

We are getting ready to purchase our 3rd roof on our home due to hail. We are thinking about metal. I did not realize there were so many kinds. Any advice or experience with the different kinds would be appreciated.

Standing seam types are the strongest. But there are several that look just like shingles so your correct about all the different kinds. Just be sure whoever does your roof understands them and has done them in the past. The only thing you must understand about metal, is it can be a bit noisy when it rains hard. Also you need to install a lightening rod system if your home is exposed as the metal top can be an issue in a severe storm. Vinyl coated steel in my opinion is the best, and with it comes a pretty hefty price tag. Steer clear of aluminum or copper if you have natural cedar siding as when the siding leaches its oils in wet weather it will corrode the roof and put holes in it.

The heavier the gauge the better...but then this adds cost. What were your old roof made of?

Yes hail can also damage a metal roof, but will not destroy it as it would an asphalt type. Also much more resistant to wind damage found during a hail storm. And KMS is correct, thicker is better. Its also better for the pocketbook of the supplier of the roof.

We just had a metal roof replaced with a traditional shingle roof. When a metal roof gets old,damaged or leaks, they can't just do an entire section. They have to do the entire thing at once which adds up to big bucks. We chased a leak forever which caused a lot of damage. We finally had to have the entire thing pulled off and all of the bad boards replaced. It was a nightmare to be honest with you.
