What to do with a dated fireplace?

What in the world can be done with this fireplace? It's in the "breakfast area" of a kitchen! How can it be made to look modern? Nothing red or yellow, please!

By what little I can see of this room, I'm thinking maybe painting the knotty pine white to match the fireplace screen and the chairs. Can you share other pictures of the room and give us idea about the colors you would like?

I agree--paint the wood white, and get rid of that fire screen. If you don't use your fireplace, I love log rounds that fill the interior--see this hometalk post: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-4515428. That side of the room is very linear, with the diagonal boards and rectangular mirror. Why not hang a round mirror instead? Also remove the wreath that's blocking the mirror and add some decor to the mantel. Candles, vases, books, all work well. Paint all of it cream...ditch the outdoor fence...light a fire in winter and in summer use candles or electric lights.

This is a very pretty room...love the colors! Ditch the fence and paint the wood the same color as the walls but not the stone. (Be sure and use a primer on wood...not those paints with primers...our experience was expensive paint then had to go back to old fashioned way...prime, then paint!) Put at least a 12" deep shelf the same color as wall from corner to corner (to draw the eye to see width in this narrow room). Soften with a plant, a teapot with a couple of cups, some family or your travel photos...you don't have to clutter it If you use the fireplace, dress it out with logs for a fire. If you don't, then get some pretty logs, screw/wire them together, set them up like you are prepared to light a fire, and then drill some indentions around in the logs in which to set candles...you can get small glass votive holders or make a small cup out of foil. Various scents for different seasons...pine is always a good one. Don't worry about smut in a fireplace, that makes it look real!

It's the panelling that is the problem. I'd repurpose it, and drywall. The picket fence as a screen doesn't work. insert an electric unit and make it a feature.

I would paint the wood the color of the walls and might also paint those stones surrounding the fireplace that same color.

I would not get rid of the wood or paint it entirely.... people are paying to put wood planking up on their walls right now..... it's back! However.... it really doesn't go well with the floor. I would simply do a wash of some kind.... run it down over the stonework as well.... the goal is not to cover any of it entirely just blend it together a little bit. I would also extend the mantle.... chunk it up. It could go the length of the wall..... paint or distress it with the color of paint you used for the wash.

I would definitely get rid of the fence/screen, and a nice area rug would make it look more filled in, the floor looks bare to me. Some plants maybe would look good, too, it looks like it needs more to take all of the focus away from that fireplace wall.

Agree with the idea of adding a plant, real or artificial. Would soften the edges in the corner. Also like the suggestion for an area rug.

I really like the update! The rug colors are so nice, it has a much more homey feel, now it looks like a place that you would want to relax in, next to a fire.

Get rid of the picket fence. Get rid of the wood paneling. Save it for another craft project. Then drywall above the fireplace. Paint the whole room in a light grey. You can try Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore.
