Modern Metallic Artwork From a Thrift Store Canvas

When I saw a big, green painted & framed canvas for only $12.99 at a thrift store, I grabbed it immediately. I’ve been looking for some large scale art for over the tub in our master bathroom that we’re currently trying to finish. I love canvas art, and the silver frame was just a bonus. This artwork measures 34 inches square, which is a great size! The texture on this canvas was also wonderful… it was just the wrong colour and not the look that I was going for. So what’s a DIYer on a budget to do? Paint over it!
This framed canvas artwork cost me $12.99 from Value Village, and I used paints I had on hand at home to paint it. That’s what I call a fantastic price for such large scale art! I’m trying to create a modern, glamourous feeling in our master bath, so I wanted the artwork above our tub to have a little sparkle and a bold feel to it. I’m usually drawn to more vintage and whimsical artwork, so creating this art was a fun step outside of my comfort zone.
I unscrewed the frame from the canvas, and then I painted the canvas with black latex paint. The more brush strokes, the better!
Once that layer was dry, I painted the bottom third of the canvas with metallic silver acrylic paint in long, uneven brushstrokes to create a modern design.
When the painting dried, I screwed the frame back on and hung my $13 modern art over our tub. I totally love it!

What a simple yet unique painting this makes. Did you paint the silver part with the canvas laying horizontally, or was the canvas semi-vertical, on an easel? I see how the many varied brush strokes cause extreme variation in the way the black paint is perceived in the light. Best wishes 😇

Lovely art work. And thank for the inspiration. I plan on doing this myself now. But where did you get the lamp shade? Is it DIY as well? If so you you explain how you made and where you got the crystal. Or where did you buy it?
