What sealer do I choose for resealing a pool deck?

We have a pool deck that is stamped concrete with a blue finish. I do not know what type of sealer was originally put down. Now the sealer is wearing off and some brown concrete is starting to show. What should I reseal it with? Polyaspartic? acrylic? urethane? And can I use a precolored sealer to cover up the brown spots? Thank you very much.

  • w/o knowing more ( how the blue was added - dry shake powder OR tinted polymer-modified cement overlay ), your best bet is to 1st determine what sealer was applied originally,,, scrub an out-of-the-way spot w/xylene - if the residue is sticky, it was a solvent-based sealer,,, if NOT, probably water-based sealer was used. the better sealers are solvent-based. i suspect they used dry-shake - applying a colored sealer MAY resolve the issue but, if it were mine, i'd thin some oil-base paint & LIGHTLY dab the spot { more thin coats than heavy - MUCH easier to darken but almost impossible to lighten },,, stay away from polyaspartics UNLESS you've the experience w/them,,, urethane's good however the experience factor is also necessary,,, the avg h/o can find an acceptable solvent sealer at sher/wms - good luck !

My husband says he thinks it was the powder. Can I use Newlook brand Smartcolor over this pre- sealed but wearing surface? Its apparently a water based nano acrylic stain and then put a sealer on top? I've tried to look at the different products online. There are so many!! What is better water based or solvent based?
  • no experience w/newlook but w/o question solvent is preferable to water,,, the amount of contained ' solids ' are important - the more the better - eg, elitecrete's ' CSS ' is a 50% solids reinforced w/methylmethacrylate,,, imho, the best sealer avail to either pro OR diy'er,,, it must be cut w/xylene (2xy:3css) to properly apply it as its too thick straight out of the 5g can,,, as w/all sealers, 2 thin coats are better than 1 heavy.

My neighbor said put xylene on it. Isnt that like a stripping solvent?

We use "Deck-O-Seal" products. Check them out on the web as they have products for stripping as well as Sealants. It's the best that we've found out there.

Look into "marine products", as many forget the boating industry works with products that are in water all the time.
