I've seen compost bins that worked great and others that were smelly messes crawling with all manner of maggots and such.
Ideally a compost bin generates enough heat to deter insects...the main composting action being microbial.
Vermi bins are another alternative

Thanks but I don't have a problem with odor. I just saw some little critters that looked like grubs. So I wasn't sure if they are a good composter or not.
If your compost is working right and warm enough, you shouldn't have grubs, LaWinda.

You need a balance of greens and browns...and a certain amount of moisture, One trick to measure the pile is with a compost thermometer
You can probably get your compost pile back in shape by adding more greens or browns until you get the proportion to about two parts green to one part brown.
