What is this plant/weed?

I have these growing randomly in my yard. (Louisville KY) This one is now about 3 feet tall. Hoping someone can tell me what it is. :)

  • believe it is Pokeweed. You need to get this pulled out or you will have a whole bed of this next year. The birds love it but the berries stain everything and it is invasive! Just pull out and dispose. good luck

I am no expert but that looks suspiciously like japanese knotweed.

Yep, that's definitely Pokeweed. I've pulled out oodles of it from my property. I've read you can eat the leaves when the plant is very young, but that it's poisonous once it's larger - haven't tried it myself! Try Googling it and you'll find loads of articles.

Whatever you do...DIG this up because it won't pull up! They are a real mess and will be everywhere! If they are in bloom, you are still safe. DO NOT leave them long enough to go to seed! They make a big root that looks like a big potato (tater it is called in the south)! A very hated weed!

This is definitely a Poke Weed. During the great depression the young sprouts were used as a green leafy vegetable that taste similar to spinach. It has to be parboiled and the water discarded then fresh water to boil again. I do not eat it now. I have out of curiosity cooked it a time or two. I remember some of the folks used it and after it was cooked scrambled some eggs in it. Not bad. Especially if you are hungry.

I have heard of and been fed polkweed, beware your system must build up to it. I found it absolutely yummy and ate too much. My aunt warned me so im warning you, slow the first few times you eat it, let your body adjust to it a few ties before drinking all that wonderful pot liquor (liquid) thanks for reminding me of a wonderful experience if not a tummy ache :) good eating :)
