Any ideas about getting rid of a possum in the back yard?

There is no dog or cat food or water there. We don't know what is attracting him. In city limits so can't shoot it.

You can rent a live trap at the local rental center. Choose a big one, use bait such as veggies from a garden. Once trapped, move them far far away and you will be good. We have them all the time, even with our dog on the prowl. They tend to nest under low lying decks, or sheds where they do not have to dig down far to feel safe.

I agree that a live trap is the way to go. If you use veggies, as Woodbridge suggests, there's less chance that you'll get a cat or something.

Be careful! They can get aggressive. Animal control might have some suggestions.

PS...since they are basically nocturnal, be prepared for your capture to be in the wee hours of the morning. We wound up with a screeching squirril from the attic at 3:30 AM! It turned out to be a long time until daylight when we could take him and relocate him!

once you catch it ...you can drive it way out in to the country somewhere where it can continue a more natural existence. I remember doing that with my grandfather with some raccoons.

Purchase, Borrow a Friends or Rent a Save A Trap....The Bigger the Better. I caught a couple with veggies, so I know that works but honestly, I've caught the most with watermelon! You could have Animal Control come pick it up I believe &/or you can drive somewhere like KMS Woodworks said, in their natural settings, the woods, big grounds. And I was told that your suppose to go as far as 10-15 miles that most especially ground hogs, can find their way back. Simply what I was told by many people, however, how much of that is true, I don't know! But to play it safe & not take a chance, that's what I always do!

I also live in city limits & I have trapped raccoons & possums in my yard, it's a safe, live trap, so once we catch one we just take it to the country or the the coop where they sell grain. lol We have trapped several!

#1) DO NOT FREAK OUT! if one gets in the house, lure it outside with something sweet...not sugar but sweet. Watermelon is a good idea....so is some kind of fruit. worry about the mess he made, or the mess you made luring him back to the outside. #2) Possums are omnivores. that means that they will eat anything that does not eat them first. They are also scavengers....so any free-for-the-taking meal he finds, he'll eat...no matter how long it has been dead(usually). I agree 100% with what others have said about getting a trap...except for one thing; I would not rent a trap, I'd rather buy one. That way you will always have it handy for the next critter that invades your home...IE: raccoon, linx, etc.....I would also recommend getting a trap for squirrels...not to actually trap them, but what do you do if they get into your home? same as what you did with the possum, sort of. Unless the squirrel knows you, knows your smell, there is no way on GOD's green earth, you could even remotely lure a squirrel to the outside.kind of like mission impossible. But you can lure him out of his hiding place & (hopefully) into a live animal trap.regardless of how you do it (possum or squirrel or any other kind of animals), keep ALL body parts away from the animal...lest you want to permanently loose them(fingers, hands, etc). Did I mention I have a pet possum? and she's just as sweet & friendly as can be. this is how I know so much about possums.

Get an extremely large dog, such as a Saint Bernard, and that should do it.
