Not sure what to do

Found this sewing machine cabinet on Craig's List. Picture looks better than the cabinet does in person. It was cheap and I needed something for my machine. Not sure whether to just clean and use or paint. Not really a big fan of painted furniture. My sewing room has a white cutting table with Purple and pink cloth baskets. Just looking for suggestions. I am not the best at seeing the potential in items

    I would paint it white and then mimic the drawers to the same colors or your baskets to tie it altogether;

    I would keep it simple and leave it all white. Then add decorative ceramic drawers pulls that include the colors of your baskets.

    you could try something on this line (it's very pretty and has some purple in it) looks like it's painted with soft pretty flowers, if you're into that: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/264023596875318119/

    If you are not a fan of painted furniture, than please don't paint it just because it's popular right now. It's a beautiful cabinet. I would recommend using either Howard's Restore A Finish in the color closest to the current finish or just their Feed and Wax. Both are super easy and have great results. I've been refinishing furniture for over 30 years now and though I often do a complete restore, it doesn't appear you need that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LARrSHU9uXQ

      @Candace P did you watch the video? These products are amazing at what they can do with furniture that looks terrible. And I did look closely at the photo and can see quite a few scratches and dings, especially on the drawers. You won't be able to make it look new again, but I'm sure you'd be pleased with one of the products in the video. From it you should learn what would work best for you piece. And think about this, a sewing table is a workhorse and paint chips.

    Just use it as is for a while before you put too much effort into it. There are some things that have to be functional that do not require that they be pretty. If it is a steady work space and is clean...it is working! You can always do something with it later. Or you might decide to change it out!....????

    I have Heard of Howard's products before. It just doesn't say what to do when there is like a chipped spot that sounds like it would be good for a lot of surface things. I'm going to clean it right now and see how it looks after that. Since I just got it I haven't had a chance to do it. 😊

      @Candace, not they don't tell you what to do for chips, as that's not what their products are for. If you want to fill them in there are wood fillers that allow you to do so. The one I used is by Elmer's. It's Probond, Stainable Wood filler. I filled in corners of a couple drawers were it appeared someone's dog had chewed them. I've yet to stain it but I've heard it stains very well. They have it in professional strength now too. Granted you are hoping not to have to refinish this, so for that you might want to use colored wood putty. Elmer's makes them too.

    I am washing it. It is nasty dirty. I see where someone poorly glued a piece from the drawer but that is easily hidden. On Howards what do you do with two colors? Is has some black trim on the drawers. Not a fan of black but what can you do with them? Any guess on what decade this is from? I'm guessing 50s

      @Candace P I'd mask off the front edge of the top that's painted black but not worry too much about the crevices if you'll be using the Howard's Restore A Finish. If you use a light hand you shouldn't have to worry about too much getting in them. Once you're finished with the RAF, and it's had time to completely dry, you can mask and paint those any color you want.

    If you aren't a big fan of painted furniture or black, a solution could be to paint it to look like wood. Take two shades of brown (lighter and darker). Use the lighter color as the base, painting the whole thing. Then, once it is completely dry, apply the darker color. You won't need a lot on your brush as the brush marks will act as your "wood grain". The result will be a painted piece covering the bad spots AND it won't look like a painted piece from a distance. Good luck on your project! I'm interested to see what you do with it. :)

    I have 2 ideas first you could cut plywood to fit top while open,add molding to the edges of plywood then paint or wallpaper the top to match your laundry room to make a craft or folding table that won't slide around because molding lip will go over the top. Or decorate top to match dining room for a buffet that's easily accessed by pulling off plywood top

    You could also put some kind of stoage( fabric) at each side of this fabulous table. 😀

    Either gel stain it all darker, or paint white, and paint the grooves the pink or purple colour of the baskets. Like someone else said use coloured knobs as well. The top could be gel stained dark if the rest is all white, or painted the bright colour that you choose for the grooves, if you go that route.

    sand where needed, then stain it and put some kind of polyerathane (sp?) on it. It looks vintage or even antique, and you could change the knobs if you wanted to. I think it's pretty good looking from photos anyway. Good luck. post pics when you're done
