Rustic (weathered) Fence Sign

My cousin requested a customized sign for a guest room. She didn't give me much direction, only a estimated size and the sentiment. The rest was up to me.
There is Always, Always, Always, Something to be Thankful For is the phrase she wanted on the sign. She left the design and the font up to me.
I use Contact paper in my Silhouette Portrait to make stencils. I've made them this way for a long time, but a few months ago I started doing things a little different. Typically you would "weed" out the letters, then transfer the stencil to your board. I now peel up the entire width and length of the stencil and place it on the board, removing the letters after the stencil is in place.
If you've weeded vinyl before (for a stencil) you'll quickly see that this step saves an extra step with the oodles and boodles (centers of a's, e's, o's etc)
This is how I put the sign together.

You lost in the process, I don’t see how you went from weathered wood, then sanded wood, then back to weathered wood...did you paint the wood grey?

Or am I misunderstanding, is the brown a contact paper that you peel off after you’ve painted the letters?
